Immigration Court

Animals from the antipodes.

Immigration Court, part of the Executive Office for Immigration Review, is an administrative body within the U.S. Department of Justice. Immigration judges review cases in over 70 different locations around the United States and its territories. You can look up the status of your case on the EOIR's website with your alien registration number (or A number).

While most would like to avoid Immigration Court, there are some sorts of relief that are only available before immigration judges. Further, because immigration judges can order you removed (i.e., deported), you need to be aware of your case status at all times. If you are or have ever been in proceedings at immigration court, checking your case status regularly can help ensure that you are not surprised.

One of the most important forms of relief available at immigration court is cancellation of removal for non-lawful permanent residents. If granted, you will eventually obtain a green card. Another form of relief from removal often pursued in immigration court is asylum and withholding of removal. There are many other forms of relief including dismissal, termination, and voluntary departure.

Further, sometimes it is better to pursue adjustment of status before an immigration judge than before USCIS especially if your case is complex. Just because you can terminate your case does not mean you should.
