As of October 20, 2025, USCIS will administer a new civics test to naturalization applicants. The oral test consists of a selection of 20 questions out of a list of 128 possible questions. You must answer 12 correctly, which means you will fail if you answer more than 8 questions erroneously.
If you happen to be 65 years or older and have been living in the United States as a lawful permanent resident for twenty plus years, then you only need to study the twenty questions with an asterisk. Further, you can take the civics test in whatever lan
guage you desire. An officer will ask you 10 out of the 20-asterisk questions. You need to get 6 correct out of 10 to pass.
It is important to study these questions and the proffered answers well in advance of your interview. If you, or your loved one, has a disability that you believe prevents taking the standard tests, a N-648, Medical Certification for Disability Exceptions form may be used to apply for an exemption from the English test and/or the civics test. Only a medical doctor, a doctor of osteopathy, or a clinical psychologist may certify the form.
